The Kokeshi Doll from Kanazawa possesses the traditional Japanese characteristics of graphic markings, sculptural silhouettes and mysterious expressions of the Kokeshi doll. Inspired by these dolls on my recent trip to Japan, I created this artwork to bring to life the Kokeshi doll. This doll features a simple structure with a round head and cylindrical body, devoid of arms and legs. The Kokeshi doll is always adorned with vibrant, hand-painted designs, reflecting the rich cultural heritage of Japan’s Tohoku region, where these dolls originated. Each detail, from the kimono to the mysterious front-on gaze, tells a story of tradition, craftsmanship, and the spirit of Japanese artistry. This piece is not just a tribute to the Kokeshi doll’s cultural significance but also a celebration of the beauty and simplicity that defines Japanese aesthetics.
